Eating Keto at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

If you have ever visited any of the parks at Walt Disney World, you already know that the words “Disney World” and (insert ANY diet name here) do not go well together.  While this is the case, if you are living a Keto lifestyle, you can still enjoy your trip while eating Keto at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  The longer that I have gone in my Keto journey, the easier it has become to completely overcome any cravings for carbs and sugar.  That said, Disney World is a little harder to tackle.  But, if you can stay strong and avoid the temptations, it can be done!

Focus on Staying in Ketosis – Not on the Caloric Intake

When I am at home, I am very strict with my caloric intake as well as my macros.  At Disney World, I focus more on staying in keto without really focusing on the calories.  I mean, I am on vacation, and I am walking like 10 miles a day while in the parks.  One thing to remember is that if you are in a table-service restaurant, let the host know that you have certain dietary restrictions and they will send out a chef to discuss your options.  You can almost always make the changes necessary to stay in ketosis.  With the quick-service restaurants and snacks, it can be a little harder, but still very possible. In this post, I will be covering my day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  On this visit, we had a mix of table-service and quick service, so let’s dive in!

Eating a Keto Breakfast at Tusker House for Donald Duck’s Safari Breakfast

To start out our day, we started out over at Starbucks (Creature Comforts) to grab a Venti Iced Coffee with heavy cream and a couple of sweet-n-lows (a common theme in all the parks, and a great way to start the day)!  After getting my caffeine, we went over to Tusker House for Donald Duck’s Safari Breakfast.  Not only did the kids love this place for the character interaction, but I really enjoyed my keto breakfast buffet as well.  As usual, I had scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage.  I simply stuck with the eggs and meat this morning, and for some reason I couldn’t eat as much as I usually do.

Finally got a Jumbo Turkey Leg for my Keto Lunch at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Since we did not have a reservation for lunch, it was up to me to do a little research and see what options would provide the best keto experience.  I had a little bit of a harder time trying to decide today as I was able to narrow it down to a Jumbo Turkey Leg from Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages or the ½ Chicken from Flame Tree Barbeque.  Since I had already had a ½ chicken a couple of days ago, I decided to go with the Jumbo Turkey Leg from Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages.  Since there is not a lot to choose from, the wife and kids headed over to Yak & Yeti Local Food Cafes and enjoyed some their amazing quick-service options.  For $15.99, I purchased a Jumbo Turkey Leg with chips (my kids shared my chips).  While the Jumbo Turkey Leg does have a bad rap, I think that they are a great keto option!  Don’t judge, I walked over 12 miles this day!

Back to Yak & Yeti for a Nice Keto Dinner

Yak & Yeti – Credit Landry’s

While we did eat at Yak & Yeti Local Foods Café for lunch, we decided to grab reservations for Yak & Yeti table-service for dinner.  Not too sure why, but Yak & Yeti has always been one of my favorite restaurants.  Also, we are members of Landry’s Select Club, so we earn points for eating here which can be redeemed for free food at this as location as well as any other Landry’s restaurant around the country.  After loading up on turkey for lunch, I really wasn’t that hungry, so I opted for a salad.  I have never tried a salad here before, so I decided to try the Kale Caesar Salad with Cilantro-Lime Seared Shrimp.  The only change that I had to make was having them remove the garlic-ginger wonton strips.   While garlic-ginger wonton strips do sound rather awesome, the salad was still great without them!

Keto Snacks at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Keto Babybel Cheese Snack

As I have done in every other park so far, I was quite thrilled to find my lovely Babybel cheese snacks.  Over in the Africa area, I found Harambe Fruit Market was selling a 6-Pack of Babybel cheese snacks for only $5.99!  I also picked up a pickle for $1.99 as well as I really enjoyed the crispy cold pickle the other day.  With the temps in the mid-90s, it was pretty nice to have a cold snack.

Other Keto Options at the Disney’s Animal Kingdom

While doing research and walking around through the park, I did come across a few other menus that looked promising for anyone doing the keto diet at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  Being that we did not want to spend too much for dinner, we did not visit Tiffin’s, but looking at their menu, it looks like they have some great options.  For appetizers, they offered an artisanal cheese platter as well as a charcuterie.  As for main entrees, they also offered a Surf & Turk, Buttered Chicken, and Pan-Seared Alaskan Halibut among others.  If I had to do this over again, I might have given Tiffin’s a try, but we will be back, and I will definitely be checking it out in the future.

Eating a Keto Breakfast at Hollywood & Vine

Eating Keto at Hollywood and Vine with Jake!
Eating Keto at Hollywood and Vine with Jake!

Like at home, breakfast is always the easiest meal to eat while in ketosis.  Since we were eating at Hollywood & Vine, besides the fact that we got to hang out with many of the lead characters from Disney Junior, I also took part in the extensive breakfast buffet.  I loaded up on scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage.  I also had a huge omelet filled with bacon, mushrooms, spinach, and cheese topped with sour cream.  After breakfast, we headed over to Starbucks (Trolley Car Café) to grab a Venti Iced Coffee with heavy cream and a couple of sweet-n-lows (a common theme in all the parks, and a great way to start the day)!

Eating a Keto Lunch at the Sci-Fi Dine-In

For lunch, I had made reservations for one of my favorite Disney World restaurants!  At the Sci-Fi Dine-In, I started my lunch out with a nice wedge salad since I knew that I would not be eating one of my sides nor would I be indulging in dessert.  While it isn’t too bad the way it is, I opted to go for no tomatoes, radish, or balsamic glaze.  Even without these things, the salad was still pretty dang good.  For my entrée, I went with the Flame-broiled New York Strip Steak cooked perfectly medium-rare.  I ordered it without the potatoes or vinaigrette, and they were nice enough to double up on the seasonal veggies with was very nice of them.  Overall, a great meal in an awesomely themed restaurant.

An Awesome Keto Dinner at the 50’s Prime Time Cafe

Keto at 50's Prime Time Cafe
50’s Prime Time Cafe

We love the 50’s Prime Time Café, so I was so happy to be eating here for dinner.  I was a little worried as I usually go with the pot-roast with mashed potatoes or the meatloaf, but since I am doing keto, I had to play by the rules.  While the 50’s Prime Time does offer a great wedge salad as an appetizer, I had planned on having a salad for my entrée, so I decided to skip on an appetizer.  For my entrée, I went with the Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken minus the croutons.  Not the most exciting meal this week, but after a hearty breakfast, an awesome and somewhat heavy lunch, and a couple of snacks, the salad did sit well, and it was enjoyable.

Keto Snacks at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

When it comes to snacks at Hollywood Studios, there are not very many great Keto options.  But, when Toy Story Land opened, Disney struck a deal with Babybel, so you can now find mini Babybel snack cheeses at many of the snack carts and stores.  While playing around over in Andy’s Backyard, we went over to Woody’s Luchbox and picked up a couple of three-packs of Babybel cheese snacks for $3.49.  Outside of this, we had a hard time finding any other viable snack options, but like I mentioned, we had three table-service meals this day, so snacking wasn’t completely necessary.

Other Keto Options at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

As you can see, I had a great day, ate well, and managed to remain in Ketosis all day while visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  Like I mentioned, there are so many other options if you are willing to put in a little time before your trip.  One place that we did not visit on this trip was The Hollywood Brown Derby.  I was a little upset that we didn’t go here as they have some great Keto options, but we were not able to make reservations, so we missed out.  Outside of this, there are plenty of burgers and hot dogs that you can get if you are okay with tossing out the buns and skipping on the sides.  I know that once Galasy’s Edge opens up, there will be a couple of additional dining options, so we are looking forward to see what the future holds at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

Eating Keto at The Magic Kingdom

If you have ever visited Walt Disney World, you know that the words Disney World vacation and (insert ANY diet name here) diet definitely do not go hand in hand.  While this is the case, if you are living a Keto lifestyle, you can still enjoy your trip while eating Keto at the Magic Kingdom.  The longer that I have gone in my Keto journey, the easier it has become to completely overcome any cravings for carbs and sugar.  That said, Disney World is a little harder to tackle.  But, if you can stay strong and avoid temptations, it can be done!

Keto breakfast is so easy to do!

Eating Keto at the Magic Kingdom at Crystal Palace

Like at home, breakfast is always the easiest meal to eat while in ketosis.  We were staying at Pop Century during our last stay, so I just grabbed breakfast at one of the resort’s quick-service stations in the cafeteria.  That said, you can go to any table-service or quick-service restaurant on property and get bacon, eggs, sausage, cheese, sour cream, etc.  Once in the park, I head over to the Starbucks (Main Street Bakery) to grab a Venti Iced Coffee with heavy cream and a couple of sweet-n-lows.  If you like to load up at breakfast, I would definitely suggest checking into the Crystal Palace for a great Keto breakfast in the Magic Kingdom.  In addition to the plethora keto breakfast options, you will also have an omelet station where you can get a good mix of veggies and cheese mixed into your omelet.

Eating Keto for Lunch at Be Our Guest

Eating Keto at the Magic Kingdom at Be Our Guest

While I could have easily opted for a Jumbo Turkey Leg while making my way around the Magic Kingdom, I knew that I would be eating a half-chicken for dinner – also we had managed to book a lunch at Be Our Guest.  My last visit to Be Our Guest led me to the amazing Braised Pork (Coq Au Vin Style).  While this meal was amazing and could have easily been made keto by removing the mashed potatoes and carrots, I went a different direction.  Being that I loaded up at breakfast, I wasn’t starving, so I actually ordered the Grilled Shrimp off of the kid’s menu.  It come with like 5 grilled shrimp, broccoli, and peach applesauce that I gave to one of my daughters.

Eating Keto for Dinner at Starlight Ray’s Cosmic Cafe

Like I mentioned earlier, I was looking forward to the ½ Rotisserie Chicken from Starlight Ray’s Cosmic Café.  Now, I will admit that it is very rare that I will actually go to or even look forward to eating at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, but after doing some research before our trip, I was actually excited about dinner here!  This meal did not disappoint!  The ½ chicken is served with mashed potatoes and green beans.  Once again, my daughters were in luck as they scored an additional serving of mashed potatoes, but the chicken and green beans were very good, and definitely did the trick!  Another great thing about Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café is the fact that they do have mobile-ordering, so we were able to place our order ahead of time as opposed to waiting in line.

Keto Snacks at the Magic Kingdom

When it comes to snacks at the Magic Kingdom, there are not very many great options.  But, when Toy Story Land opened up, Disney struck a deal with Babybel, so you can now find mini Babybel snack cheeses at many of the snack carts and stores.  While I would never waste a snack credit on a Babybel cheese, they do have them all over the parks for $3.49.  In the Magic Kingdom, I found them at the Liberty Square Market and bought a few and threw them in our little cooler.  They also had whole pickles for $1.99 each, so I picked up a couple of them as well.  I think my daughters actually ate one of them as I was never hungry enough to get to both of them!

Babybel Cheese as a Keto Snack option

Other Keto Options at the Magic Kingdom

As you can see, I had a great day, ate well, and managed to remain in Ketosis all day while visiting the Magic Kingdom.  Like I mentioned, there are so many other options if you are willing to put in a little time before your trip.  One thing that I did not try was Casey’s Corner, but I know that they do have some great options there if you don’t mind tossing the bun!  Right not, they are offering the Buffalo Chicken All-Beef Foot Long Hot Diggity Dog.  I have not tried this, but all of the pictures that I am seeing looks like they use a grilled chicken tossed in buffalo sauce on top of a foot-long hot dog that is topped with chopped celery and a garlic ranch drizzle.  I would definitely eat this if I saw it.

Where Can I Find a Jumbo Turkey Leg at Disney World?

Love them or hate them, Jumbo Turkey Legs remain a Disney World park favorite.  In addition to the people that just really love turkey legs, there has also been a huge spike in the Keto Diet community.  If you are not familiar with the Keto Diet, it is basically night fat, moderate protein, and low carb, which make the turkey leg an amazing option for someone eating Keto as each Jumbo Turkey leg contains about 36 grams of fat with no carbs.  But this post isn’t about the Keto Diet, you came here because you want to know where you can find a Jumbo Turkey Leg at Disney World.

Jumbo Turkey Leg Facts

Real quick, I want to share a little bit about Jumbo Turkey Legs that you might know.  Each Jumbo Turkey Leg weighs about 1.5 pounds.  While a chink of that weight is from the bone, just know that when you start out, you will be lugging around a pound and a half!  Also, did you know that the two main United States Disney Parks (Disney World Resort and Disneyland) sell a combined 1.6 million Jumbo Turkey Legs per year which equals just under 2.5 million pounds per year.  Also, many people claim that Jumbo Turkey Legs taste like pork and this is caused by the fact that they are cured in salt the same way that most pork is cured.  Finally, for those of you worried about calorie intake, the Jumbo Turkey Leg is going to cost you about 720 calories.

Where can’t I get a Jumbo Turkey Leg at Disney World?

First off, let me tell you where you will not find a Jumbo Turkey Leg.  You will not find a Jumbo Turkey Leg in Hollywood Studios.  As of a few years ago, the one place that specialized in Turkey Legs has closed and they have not found a new home for them yet.  Also, you cannot get a traditional Jumbo Turkey Leg in Disney Springs.  The Smokehouse at the House of Blues does sell a turkey leg that is VERY good, but it is not the traditional Disney Jumbo Turkey Leg.  When you get one at the Smokehouse at the House of Blues, it will also be the best price you will find as it comes in at $10.99.

Where can I get a Jumbo Turkey Leg at Disney World?

Here is a list of places in Walt Disney World that sell the Jumbo Turkey Leg.  You will notice that depending on where you are, you can expect to pay different amounts.  Additionally, you will see that most places sell them on their own, but there is one place that offers them with a side of potato chips.

Where can I get a Jumbo Turkey Leg at Epcot?

At Epcot, you can find a Jumbo Turkey Leg at Fife & Drum Tavern at the American Pavilion.  At Fife & Drum Tavern, the Jumbo Turkey Leg will set you bac $13.25.

Where can I get a Jumbo Turkey Leg at Disney’s Animal Kingdom?

Moving over the Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you can find the Jumbo Turkey Leg at Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages.  This location will sell the Jumbo Turkey Leg with a side of chips, so this one is going to cost you $15.99 which also makes it the most expensive Jumbo Turkey Leg we found at Disney World.  You will find Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages over to the right hand side of Yak & Yeti Bhaktapur Market in the Asia area of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Where can I find a Jumbo Turkey Leg at the Magic Kingdom?

Finally, over in the Magic Kingdom, you have three options to choose from to get your Jumbo Turkey Leg fix!  First up is Tortuga Tavern.  Now, Tortuga Tavern has been famous for only being open on very busy days, but we have heard lately that they are offering a set menu at this time, so maybe you will have luck here.  Tortuga Tavern offers the Jumbo Turkey Leg for $12.49, and you can find Tortuga Tavern in Adventureland across from the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean.

Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom

Our next stop in the search for Jumbo Turkey Legs in the Magic Kingdom takes us to Liberty Square Market.  At Liberty Square Market, you will find the Jumbo Turkey Leg for $12.49.  According to their menu, it is only available after 11:00am, so unfortunately, you will have to find something else for breakfast!  Liberty Square Market is in…  you guessed it, Liberty Square – just to the left of the Hall of Presidents.

Our final stop in the Magic Kingdom that sells Jumbo Turkey Legs is going to be over in Fantasyland at Prince Eric’s Village Market across from Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid.  Prince Eric’s Village Market stays in line with the other Magic Kingdom locations selling the Jumbo Turkey Leg for $12.49.

Final Words

So, as you can see, you can get your Jumbo Turkey Leg fix at a handful of locations throughout Walt Disney World.  I want to say that this list could change at any time, so I would definitely log into your My Disney Experience app during your stay to make sure that these places are open and still serving the Jumbo Turkey Leg.  Do you like the Jumbo Turkey Legs at Disney World?  Will you go out of your way to find one?  Let us know in the comments below.  Also, please share this with any of your Jumbo Turkey Leg loving Disney Fanatic friends!

Using the My Disney Experience App for Mobile Ordering

On our last adventure to Disney World, we had the pleasure of experiencing Mobile Ordering.  We usually do the Deluxe Dining Package, but on our last trip, we decided to go with the Quick Service plan, and we took advantage of it!  We did the mobile ordering in every park except for Epcot as it is not as integrated in that park just yet.  We also really like D-Luxe Burger in Disney Springs, so we were excited to see that they were the only location in Disney Springs that offered Mobile Ordering. While it is a great program to take advantage of in Disney World, it can be a little confusing.  It is not that hard to place an order, but knowing what to do, when to do it, and where to go can be a little confusing the first few times.  Here is a step-by-step guide to using the My Disney Experience App for Mobile Ordering.

Step by Step Instructions for Mobile Ordering at Disney World

  1. Login to the My Disney Experience app on your phone. Once logged in, click on “Order Food” under the “My Plans” tab on the app’s main screen.
  2. Next, you will see a list of participating restaurants where you will then be able to select the restaurant you want to order from.
  3. Once you select a location, you will be taken to the restaurant’s page where you will see “Order Food.”
  4. The next screen will take you to the menu where you will be able to choose any items that you wish to add to your cart.  Select and modify everything you want.
  5. Once complete, you will click on the bag on the top right corner to review and submit your order.  Make sure everything is correct and then submit your order to the restaurant.
  6. On your way over to the restaurant, go back into the app and let them know to start your order.  Head into the restaurant and look for a table and wait for them to let you know it’s ready.
  7. Once your order is ready, you will receive a notification on your phone.  Go over to the Mobile Order pick-up window and get your food.

Don’t be that guy…

Please do not send your order and then go and stand in the pick-up window.  There are so many people that think that since they placed the order that it will be ready right away, so there can be large crowds packed around the pick-up window.  Don’t be that guy!  I promise you, as soon as your food is in the window, you will get an alert on your phone letting you know that it is ready!
